Sickle Cell

1 in 13 Black babies carry the sickle cell trait.

While 1 in 365 African American babies are born with sickle cell disease; about 1 in 13 Black babies carry the sickle cell trait. This genetic blood disease is complicated by the limited access to comprehensive care as well as the expense of care management.

Many living with sickle cell disease suffer additional comorbidities, have limited coordinated care, and are economically vulnerable. Life expectancy is often significantly reduced. Pain management, assistance with medical treatment, and improved communication between doctors and patients can all contribute to improved well-being for people living with sickle cell.
