2020 National Black Political Convention to Convene April 16-18 in Washington, DC
Washington, DC — On March 10-12, 1972, under the leadership of U.S. Congressman Charles Diggs (MI), Mayor Richard Hatcher (Gary, IN) and author/activist Amiri Baraka hosted the first ever National Black Political Convention in Gary, IN. This historic event was overwhelmingly received by nearly 10,000 convention participants. In 2016, The National Policy Alliance convened the second NBPC. The city of Gary was again the gracious host to participants. Both historic meetings yielded a Black Agenda that was shared across the country with the media, national organizations and educational institutions.
Today, under the partnership of the organizations listed, NBPC will convene, the third NBPC on April 16-19 in Washington, DC. This historic meeting will include many prominent experts lending their thoughts, opinions and recommendations. Utilizing technology, the agenda will be created in real-time during the sessions. The theme “Setting the Peoples Agenda” will have a slant on the continuing power of female voices in the United States and around the world.
Tuskegee, AL former Mayor Johnny Ford, who attended the 1972 convention and a 2016 & 2020 convener, stated that, “We are proud to convene this third historic meeting to discuss strategies that will encourage policy and action from officials, representatives and people at large regarding economic development, education, social justice, energy, health, wellness and other critical matters in our communities As well, during this meeting, we will honor the legacy of the NBPC founders. We welcome the lineup of powerful speakers.”
The schedule will include a Presidential Candidates Forum at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland. NBPC sessions will be held at the Washington Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC. Invited speakers include: President Barack Obama; Sen. Cory Booker; Senator Kamala Harris; former Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr.; Rev. Louis Farrakhan; and all the current presidential candidates.
The National Policy Alliance (NPA) is serving as the organizer for this historic event and is composed of the eight major organizations representing over fourteen thousand black public officials; as well as Blacks in Government whose members are federal, state and local government employs across the country.
